The Charleston celebrates Two Years

4 Apr

~ Y.I.A. @ the Chuck’s Grand Opening, 2008 | Angel Perry ~

Two years may not seem like a long time, but for many all ages venues it’s a lifetime. Bremerton’s Charleston Music Venue turns two this month w/ a slate of special birthday shows.

It all kicked off last night (April 2 — Barbie’s Barfday Bash/The Assasinators CD Release Show), goes on tonight (April 3) with the Chuck’s official birthday bash featuring Boise, Id. bands N.F.F.U., Pull Out Quick, Adamant Allies and A New Agenda w/ a re-birthed Project 9, and continues next week as the bodacious Hell’s Belles celebrate their 10th anniversary, April 10 at the Chuck.

See more on those shows and more scattered throughout this month’s Smokestack — out now in print and in the digital archive.

For more on the Chuck — and the Callow Avenue venue’s inspiring story of ambition and unity in the face of authority — see this month’s feature, a gonzo retrospective on Bremerton’s 21st century all ages music scene through the eyes of Angel Perry… Continue reading

Tumbledown’s NXSW Tour Diaries

9 Mar

Mike Herrera’s Tumbledown — the Bremerton-based pop-punkabilly/country western-y side project of the bassist and lead singer of MxPx — is winging it’s way through the American midwest, onto the Lone Star State, across the desert and back up the West Coast on a month-long tour to-and-from the South By Southwest music mecca in Austin, Texas this month.

We feature Tumbledown in our latest print edition, dedicated to The Touring Musician — [see that here] — and we’ll be following the band vicariously through a short series of gonzo tour diaries, photos and ephemera in Tumbledown’s NXSW Tour Diaries.

Shameless Self Promotion

23 Jan

~Smokestack Vinyl Night Jan. 29 | Poster: MLS Jr~

So. . . The Smokestack is on Facebook now. You can link to it here in this purely self-serving Smokestack post. We’re also on Twitter… you Twitter-ites can follow us @kitsmokestack.

But word has it “Twitter is so 2009.”

Taking it back even further… more like 1979… The Smokestack is hosting a Vinyl Night Jan. 29 @ the Drift Inn in downtown Bremerton… setting up a live action vinyl jukebox w/ DJ FUKPHACE (Mike Moen from Neutralboy) and MC SIDESHOW (Pat Makins from Rewind) spinnin your old records in support of the Smokestack. Dave Ryan’s also gonna be bringing his stencil-on-vinyl painted records for the party… plus live music, stiff drinks and more. (See flyer above for the info).

And to follow up on this shamelessly self-promoting post, here’s a slightly self-serving public service announcement from our January edition…. (don’t forget the next Smokestack is out Jan. 28)… Continue reading

Thee Smokestack In Print — No. 2

26 Nov

~Vol. 1, No. 2 | Smokestack~

Though you might be hard pressed to find a copy, the second print edition of Thee Kitsap Smokestack is out today. Happy Thanksgiving. Find it at the locations listed under Thee Smokestack In Print — probably starting Friday since most are closed for the Holiday.

Winterland will be open later this Thanksgiving evening, however, so you can nurse that tryptophan hangover with a nice stiff drink — or just ditch those annoying relatives. And tomorrow, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., The RockIt Roost will be partying for Black Friday, celebrating their First Anniversary with Silver City brews, champagne and mad deals, including their own version of ‘Deal or No Deal’ — all in-store.

And speaking of First Anniversaries… check out the cover story from this month’s Smokestack In Print: A Gonzo look from behind the patch of the international Pyrate Punx organization. The Bremerton Chapter, Local 029, celebrates its One Year Anniversarrry Bash Dec. 11. . .

You may have seen the not so shy pyrate skull and crossbones patches stitched over some of the familiar punks’ hearts around town.

Let me start by saying that WE ARE NOT A GANG.

If you’re looking for a definition, call us a non-profit music productions union. More realistically, we’re a handful of kids and adults who branched outside of what Bremerton had to offer to see what else we could bring to this town. We found the Pyrate Punx, a 12 year old organization that was founded in Oakland, CA. . . . Continue reading
